About the project
Project 361.1 is a civic initiative dedicated to raising awareness about political repression in Belarus. Through a collection of powerful drawings made by political prisoners, the project documents the lived experiences of those incarcerated for their democratic beliefs and peaceful activism.
Our goal is to ensure that these stories are not forgotten — and that they contribute to a broader understanding of the cost of fighting for freedom in authoritarian contexts.
The book we are creating serves as both a historical record and a tool for solidarity, amplifying the voices of prisoners and exposing the violations committed by the Belarusian regime. It is designed to reach the public, institutions, and organizations that advocate for human rights and democratic values.
The criminal article 361.1
Article 361.1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus criminalizes participation in organizations designated as extremist by the authorities. This includes involvement in their activities, support, or collaboration, even if peaceful in nature. In practice, the article is often used to repress independent media, civil society, and pro-democracy activists, with penalties including imprisonment. It has become a tool for silencing dissent and criminalizing civic engagement.
